A Discussion on Fan Art

Being an active member of deviantART and Founder of NintyFans, I am well aware that Fan Art is a popular way for fans to express their appreciation (or at times, dislike) at a particular game, or games company.

So why is fan-art so popular? I have compiled a small series of interviews with three very different deviantART members on the subject to find out the reasons why.

deviantART member: Grave-joy
Can you recall the first game fan art you ever drew?
Erm, probably Super Mario fan-art when I was about 4, because I was a bit obsessed with it at the time. After that, I just went on to doodle loads of characters of the games I played, especially the enemies. I was always obsessed with the minions, like the Goombas from Super Mario.

Are there any games that inspired you to start drawing, or still continue to give you ideas?
I wouldn't say games inspired me to start drawing. I think at first it was my imagination, and then in later years, comic books. I wouldn't say games give me ideas now, I just tend to like drawing the characters from the games I like.

Why do you enjoy drawing game fan art?
I draw game fan art because it's fun, and I know unlike my other drawings, people can appreciate it at a more personal level.

Could you recommend some interesting game characters that are worth drawing?
Well, in terms of characters that could actually improve your drawing, I would say choose to draw characters that have complex clothing, or highly detailed uniforms of some kind, such as any female character who may have an over-the-top dress, or any macho armoured hero, as the details on the armour and the scars on the skin really force you to pay attention to detail. But mainly draw the characters you like. You'll be better at it, and your heart will be in your drawing.

Lastly, is there a game you are currently anticipating buying upon release?
I'd say possibly Dead Island, but I'm not too sure about it yet. I did want Duke Nukem Forever, but then due to mixed reviews, I think I would wait a while for that one, rather than pay full price for it. Also, Assassins Creed Revelations and Tomb Raider Reborn

Can you recall the first game fan art you ever drew?
Ever? That was quite a long time ago. Since deviantART? Resident Evil.
Oh! Magic and Mayhem pictures for my Dad. It was a mini-Cerberus with a ridiculous amount of blood and love hearts all over it.

Are there any games that inspired you to start drawing, or still continue to give you ideas?
It depends on how much it appeals to me and how much I get into it. Resident Evil definitely because I was brought up with it and I have more fun with it.
Why do you enjoy drawing game fan art?
Because if I enjoy it that much, it is on my mind. I get characters personalities in my mind and exaggerate them, then try and caricature them on paper. It entertains me to take a character that people know and still make it recognisable in my own style. I like the challenge.

Could you recommend some interesting game characters that are worth drawing?
Um, I always find it more interesting to draw monsters that are more grotesque and make them cute. The Resi monsters are a good example. I really enjoyed drawing the G-Mutations-it was fun. With my style I have to pick out certain traits that stand out, so I have to pick out what I am going to exaggerate, and what I am going to keep, and that makes  it fun.

Lastly, is there a game you are currently anticipating buying upon release?
There would be a number of titles if I had a 3DS but I don't.

Such as?
Ocarina of Time and all the Resident Evil games.

Can you recall the first game fan art you ever drew?
Hmm...yeah, I think it was Sonic, oh and Master Chief.

Are there any games that inspired you to start drawing, or still continue to give you ideas?
I dunno, I guess it is any game I am really into that I like to draw about. At the moment it's Starcraft.

Why do you enjoy drawing game fan art?
Erm, because I am so addictive and obsessive, drawing gives me more enjoyment of the game, and I get to surround myself in the game world, and it allows me to expand on the games universe.

Could you recommend some interesting game characters that are worth drawing?
I think, I don't think it is something you really recommend. Something that someone suggests may not be something you are into. Just draw something you are into, then you will enjoy it.

Lastly, is there a game you are currently anticipating buying upon release?
Loads-er, Battlefield 3, Terra Online, Star Wars Old Republic, Diablo, there's going to be an expansion for Starcraft 2. That's pretty much it, but mostly Battlefield 3.
